It does not matter if you have garden that is 10 feet square or 10 hectares, we can all benefit by using a container to draw the eye and cause an interruption that acts as a focal point.
Terracotta is a great middle of the road medium and very warm material to use but nowadays there are a huge range of contemporary or antique designs to suit every taste.
Do not limit the use of containers to sitting in the corner of a patio or lawn but use them in herbaceous borders or shrub beds.
One important tip, in fact two important tips is to vary the sizes if you group containers together and use odd numbers.
A point that was emphasised to us as students at Merrist Wood horticulture college was the importance of odd numbers in planting or in the use of design objects.
A single tree, plant or pot can be viewed from 360 degrees but two trees have a blind spot at 0 and 180 degrees. However, the psychology of having that third dimension by creating an odd number leads the eye into being fooled and it accepts the compromise.
The sizes are important too. Use a large dominant pot as a single feature with two or four extra varying sizes of pot which as subservient ladies in waiting.
Try it out and play and don't be too put off if the first display doesn't work out. Its good fun and experience just to try different methods.
