Gardener to the big house
Having half an hour to spare yesterday I thought I would wander around the gardening blogs to see who was doing what.
Here's one you need to check out - UKBob and Gardener to the big house is a gardener on an country estate house after giving up his life on a farm. Bob obviously enjoys his work which exudes passion when he writes on his blog.
Bob's excitement for his work leaves the impression of a 12 year old who has just come home from scout camp and wants to tell his Mum about everything he did that day and what he is going to do tomorrow.
There are some great tips too with inspirational pictures of clipping box hedges and edging grass at the side of the drive.
All the Worlds a Garden
Richard has been experimenting with Picasa to set up a slide show showing how to string onions. For me this is perfectly relevant because I have 150 onions drying which need tidying up.
One point about stringing onions. It is not a job to do just to make the onions look pretty - although it does do that too - but it ensures good air circulation until you come to need the onion (storing them in a box would make them go bad) and it also saves a huge amount of space.
Veggie Gardening Tips
Now this post from Kenny Point at Veggie Gardening Tips has really got wet my appetite. Kenny has just written about growing your own wild mushrooms by inoculating hardwood logs with the spawn of shiitake, oyster, maitake, and many more mushrooms.
Kenny provides further reading on growing Gourmet Mushrooms here.
Anyone who has been following Landscape Juice will be aware that I live on an old French Farm in the Lot et Garonne. We have edible wild mushrooms growing here and of course, being very close to the dense oak woods of the Dordogne we are on the edge of Truffle country too.
I am extremely interested in harvesting wild mushrooms but it is something I have only dabbled in. I have bookmarked Kenny's post and I will be sending off for a kit and giving it a go. With over 2 acres of hardwood copse here at Jean Blanc it could be a winner - watch this space.
Popping back to the subject of truffles - I keep an eye on the Truffle market in the UK and it seems like it is going to be another bumper year. A was going to write about the story featured in the Daily Mail - Boy claims amazing ability at finding truffles with his feet - a while back but it slipped through the net. With Truffles selling for £200 per kilo it could be a very lucrative hobby.
If you are looking for a trip to France on a Truffle hunt then Truffle UK organise trips including visits to Truffle orchards, truffle markets a truffle ‘masterclass’ and a gastronomic truffle dinner.
