You could call it market forces, you might even take a cynical view that it is greedy marketeers cashing in on a seasonal demand worth over £100 million.
The news out of Denmark is not good if you are looking to buy a Nordmann Christmas tree in time for the big day.
Prices are set to rise by up to 25% because of a shortage of Nordmann Fir.
Let us hope that British Christmas tree growers can now leverage this situation to improve the supply chain within the UK. It takes 10 years to groom a Nordmann but we now know, from information provided by the head of the association of Christmas tree growers Kaj Oestergaard, that there will be 300-400,000 less trees coming out of Denmark for the foreseeable future.
With the right planning and investment now, together with support from the British Christmas Tree growers association, growers could capitalise on this opportunity.
