I know that there is little time to carry out your chores in the garden now that the nights are short. For many of you who work away or in an office during the week there is only but Saturday and Sunday to finish off pruning and cutting back of herbaceous plants etc.
However, with unseasonably mild weather and an expected increase in December rainfall you will be wise to stay off off the lawn if the surface is extremely wet or water logged.
The quickest way to undo all of your autumn maintenance is by compacting the surface and ruining the soil structure with constant traffic back and forth between the borders and the compost heap.
If you find that it is imperative to work in the garden - lets face it, it is very liberating when you are wrapped up warm and dry to be out in the wind and rain - then think about hiring a few scaffold boards to lay along the length of the border or across the lawn o that you can spread your weight and avoid damage.
When the work is done, lift the boards and prick the area the boards have been laying with the tips of your garden fork to open up the surface again.
