Enjoy the summer by all means but do not get behind with essential gardening jobs or you may find it a little tougher later on.
Here are ten jobs that may need your attention right now.
1. Wisteria will have grown well this year (2008) and with so much rainfall mixed with some sunshine the shoots can be well over six feet in length.
Tie in any healthy shoots where you have gaps or wish to extend the climber. It pays to have already fixed wires, Pergolas or Trellis in advance. You will fins the wispy shoots easy to manipulate and direct to where you need them. Be careful not to snap or distress the softwood too much otherwise die back could occur.
Now cut back all the untidy shoots (or take some air layers for free reproduction) that are surplus to requirements. This will make your Wisteria look sharp and clean again and allow good air circulation too.
2. Cut back and deadhead any flowers that are looking past their best or becoming brown and ugly. Remember to collect seeds where you can - especially on annuals - for use at a later date.
Some plants, especially Roses, will flower again if cut you dead head or lightly prune in early August.
3. Start collecting Apples and think of a nice dark cool place to store them for eating later on. Check out this great PDF fact sheet on all aspects of Apple growing and caring for your apples.
It will not long before you have to start planning your Autumn/Winter maintenance for your apple trees.
