The University of Milan in Italy, believe they have found a natural alternative to Viagra. Writes the New Scientist.
Scientists, led my professor Mario Dell'Agli believe that Epimedium brevicornum or Horny Goat Weed (sometimes called Bishops Hat), contains a naturally occuring chemical that inhibits an enzym which controls blood flow.
Viagra contains a compound called sildenafil which works by inhibiting an enzyme called phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5). PDE5 is responsible for helping to control blood flow to the penis and by inhibiting the PDE5, a man is more capable of holding an erection.
The scientists extracted icariin from the Epimedium and although eighty times less effective than sildenafil, but it is believed that the compound that was extracted from the Horny Goat Weed only effects the erectile dysfunction unlike sildenafil which can interfere with the heart and the eyes as a side effect.
Don't get your hopes up though, it will take at least ten years of clinical trials before this alternative treatment could be ready.
