A partnership by two Cambridged based companies has resulted in the development of a cure for horse chestnut bleeding canker - Pseudomonas syringae pv. aesculi.
JCA arboricultural Consultants and Allicin Tree Care have developed a new product called Conquer and made from Garlic extract.
Garlic is one of the oldest known effective anti bacterial and anti fungal agents but until now, it has not been possible to harness its qualities.
Bleeding Canker is a vascular disease that spreads through ground water and control was considered to be impossible because the bacteria spreads through a tree's cambium layer.
Conquer has been tested by TNO, Organisation for Applied Scientific Research who confirmed that it destroys Pseudomonas syringae pv. aesculi.
The product will be launched later this year.
As soon as any tree shows signs of being infected it is treated by introducing the product directly into the cambium and around the stem where it is distributed by capillary action and root pressure.
Whilst testing of Conquer, it was found to have a positive impact on the control of horse chestnut leaf miner - Cameraria ohridella by making tainting the trees sap with garlic which the miner finds offensive.
