Environment Secretary Hilary Benn says that neonicotinoid pesticides are not the reason for the decline in the loss of British bees and has refused to ban products that contain the active ingredient.
The Farmers Guardian reports today that, in a letter sent to the Soil Association, Benn said: [there is] "no evidence the use of those pesticides caused the decline in bee numbers."
Despite a ban on neonicotinoids in other European counties, DEFRA insist that there are already adequate controls for pesticides in place and there is not evidence to suggest that any restrictions should be increased.
Read this PDF file from 2004 which gives a bit of background on how nicotine, in larger doses, have effected honey bees.
