If you are planning to plant a wisteria then it is worth taking your time to train it exactly where you want it to go.
Its shoots will grow extremely rapidly through the summer and if neglected, your young plant could quickly become a sprawling mess and spoil your joy in the future.
Unruly tendrils are easily snipped back in the summer and don't worry, there isn't a great deal of damage you can do - just don't be too hard - leave about seven buds.
In the Winter it is your opportunity to cut back, shape and re-train in order to present the best flowering opportunity for the following Spring.
When all of the leaves have disappeared it will be much easier to see what is happening.
Remove any die-back or damaged branches or shoots and tie in tendrils that you have left for training to a new area.
Cut back the spurred shoots to about two or three buds to ensure of flowering the following season.
Tools needed: Secateurs, long handled loppers or pruners, fruit pruning saw, knife.
The video is brief but a good outline of the process.
