I take my hat off to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds for attending a meeting that included many people with an interest in shooting.
Writing on his community blog, RSPB's conservation director, Mark Avery, said he had attended an evening as an after dinner speaker - his message 'the RSPB is not anti-shooting'.
What a brave and important thing to say and I reckon it will go a long way to help improve relationships between the different groups in the British countryside.
Avery went on: "we [RSPB] do recognise that those who practise field sports often share our love of the countryside and nature to a very large extent. We don't see everything in exactly the same way - but let's try to get along!"
What the RSPB really wish to see stamped out is the illegal poisoning and indiscriminate killing of birds of prey by some sections of the shooting community.
