The Met Office have issued a severe weather warning for Southern England saying that there is 15-20cm (6-8 Inches) expected for central southern areas with some localised drifts expected to accumulate up to 40cm (16 inches).
It says that the severe weather conditions that have lingered over Scotland and the north for several weeks is now moving south; the Met Office weather map (click to enlarge) shows the worst of the snowfall centred around the Reading, Newbury and Basingstoke areas.
The last heavy snowfall in the south hit Basingstoke hardest; An estimated 2000 cars were left abandoned throughout the town and surrounding areas, meaning snowploughs and gritting lorries being unable to clear and grit surfaces.
From a gardening perspective; keep a watchful eye on small trees and hedges and be prepared to knock off excessive accumulations. Snow can easily weigh down branches leaving them either permanently damaged or snap them clean off; otherwise, stay indoors and wait for the thaw.
This video shows what Basingstoke was like after the snow of the 21st December 2009.
