The New York Botanical Rose Garden have over 3,675 plants divided between 600 varieties and at present just 53% are genetically modified and don't need to be treated with pesticides.
Peter Kukielski, Curator, New York Botanical Rose Garden, hopes to become 100% pesticide free by developing disease-resistant hybrids.
Peter Kukielski commented, "We are also trying to create healthy soils again by feeding the soils, by putting good bacteria back into the soils by using compost teas, so I think the side effect of all of this is that the whole environment is a much healthier environment."
