I think the smartphone is going to be known as the greatest device ever to change the way we live our lives.
I think, in 100 years time, mankind will look back at this little device and put it above the motor car, aeroplane and television as the one single thing that has impacted out every day lives: not all of it good, I accept that.
Many apps available from iTunes are a waste of space and little more than a gimmick.
Occasional though, one makes my ears prick up and this latest one from Bayer did just that.
Here's what it says on the tin:
Bayer TurfXpert
The new ‘Bayer TurfXpert’ app contains photographs and detailed information on over 100 turf diseases, turf weeds and turf insect pests found in the UK. High resolution images of weeds and a simple to use disease and weed identifier tool allows turf managers to arrive at a treatment or a cultural management solution.
For turf disease diagnosis a 4 step process has to be followed and for weed identification it’s only a simple 2 step process. This allows for quick and easy identification while in the field.
Even an expert needs a little help sometimes and it's not deemed professional to walk around a client's lawn holding a reference book but an iPhone is unobtrusive.
If it really can do what Bayer says then it will fly off the shelves.
It's not restricted to experts either. Lawn enthusiasts too could use the app to make their own diagnosis of lawn problems before either doing the work themselves or calling in a pro.
