Diplomas in greenkeeping, sports turf and golf course upkeep are now available 100% on the job, writes Carol Miers.
Speaking to Mr David Golding the education director at the Greenkeepers Training Committee (GTC) he explained the government changes: "It's training off the job, on the job.
"The NVQ's in Great Britain have now been branded by the government as Work-based diplomas. To the outside world the standards haven't really changed. The advantage to us is that whether it's horticulture or landscapes or even sports the skills and knowledge can only be really delivered in the workplace, and now the title spells that out,” he said.

Greenkeeping Jobs has been charged with looking for the right placement by a client who wishes to start on the golf course ladder.
At this moment in time he does not wish to be too picky about the job, however, he wishes to put his skills, gained in agronomy, irrigation and agriculture to good use.

Surfing around some of the golf course website this morning, in search of contact information, I seemed to draw a bit of a blank when it came to contact details for greenkeepers and I wondered why?
Forget the flashy club house with power showers in the lavish changing rooms or the freshly tarmacked car park. Ignore the plush pile in the carpet of the salubrious lounge bar and look out of the clubhouse window at the superbly presented eighteenth fairway, approaches and extremely well presented green with a true sward.
