Allotmenteering (is that a proper phrase?) I suppose has changed its role in life over the years. Self sufficiency was a way of life way back then and during the war years a necessity.
Now it is a combination of a wish to grow and eat fresh organic produce and for many a retreat from the daily grind to get away, indulging in an earthy hobby.
After my post Rod Perch or Pole asking for information on the history of allotments I was contacted by allotmenteer Peter Douglas who pointed me in the direction of his own garden blog and also guided me to Bishop's Stortford Allotment and Garden Association. Thank you Peter.
I would like to think that Britain will see a resurgence of allotments to fight off the bulldozer. Send me your photos here at Landscape Juice and I will be delighted to highlight your organisation or own allotment or event.
The BBC's National Village Show seeks to highlight the traditional Village Show and lets hope will re-kindle some interest in that field. Getting children involved is the key. Alan Titchmarsh says he was inspired as a child by watching Percy Thrower on the television.
If you have any old photos, maps, articles or old documents then please send a copy via email to Landscape Juice
i think that i investigated this a while ago(must have been bored).
there is a law/rule that local councils HAVE to provide allotments, where there is still an interest.so maybe if they sell some off ,they are replacing them elsewhere in town/village.
