Hearing the news that a single Snowdrop bulb has sold for £150.00 makes me wonder if the plant world has gone mad.
This time of year, when the Snowdrop emerges from beneath to brighten a dark and dingy corner with its star like twinkle, you will find many galas and auctions dedicated to selling them.
There are over 70 varieties and their collectors, galanthophiles, have created a micro market likened to the great Tulip craze.
I for one am a great fan of the Snowdrop. I had an elm hedge with ivy growing through it and in the winter, when the leaves had gone I would wait eagerly for the little green tips to emerge and when the flowers opened it was as though the lights had been turned on.
Would I pay £150.00. I am not so sure but can you put a value on this little ray of sunshine in the plant world?
They are easy to grow and like a little lime with a humus rich soil and will give you years of pleasure.
