Mike Seaton, aka Dr Lawn, the founder of the Lawn Society has set tongues wagging after telling the organiser of the Chelsea flower show, Bob Sweet that the British lawn needs to be recognised at the Royal Horticulture Society Chelsea International flower show.
The lawn society hijacked proceedings by awarding their unofficial Gold Medal to Brian Alabaster. Brian whose naturalistic sculptures sell for up to £20,000, was judged to have the best lawn in the show.
The message has now really hit home and Bob Sweet, admitted that the subject of lawns is the number one topic at their advice centre during the show, is taking the criticism seriously.
The topic has hit the headlines in such a strong way that the Times newspaper has featured it in its broadsheet and Tomes on line version.
I spoke to Mike Seaton this morning and he has exclusively revealed to me, that the RHS have taken his criticisms of their lack of lawn coverage on board, and a new category featuring lawns, is now seriously being considered for the show.
What a coup for the Lawn Society! I have championed grass on so many occasions and the BBC have taken my criticisms to heart and are definitely featuring the greenkeepers efforts on their coverage more often.
Grass is not rockets science but it is a science never the less. As professionals we can look to share and impart our knowledge and with £400 million annual spend the market can only benefit.
I would like to see a gardening programme dedicated to lawns.
