Much is being made about how concreting over gardens has increased the risk of flooding because water has lost it's ability to pass into the sub-soil and reach the water table.
Vast surfaces of patios, tarmac roads and drives, gravel and even synthetic lawns are reducing our gardening spaces year on year.
It is not just the drainage and water levels we need to consider. Taking away vegetable gardens, lawns and shrub borders also reduces the potential for beneficial insects and spiders to populate and breed.
The food chain is dependent on insect proportions and numbers being right for the whole eco-structure to be maintained. Many of the insects in the garden help to pollunate flowers and eat other less ideal predators which form part of the food chain.
Many birds stick to territories and imagine what chaos it is causing when a blackbird is forced to compete with it's neighbour and rival because someone has damaged or removed the feeding ground.
If you live in a flat or your garden has suffered from reduced open green space then why not consider making or buying a simple little insect tower?
