Just as I predicted before the Croatia game, the game was indeed a "test too far" and the FA are set to install a new surface - writes Paul Kelso of the Guardian.
I knew immediately after the FA Cup warm up that the composition of the rootzone was inadequate and the roots themselves have their work cut out to survive. It did not matter that the pitch was relatively new but what was important was the specification. 50% sand does not provide a good anchor for grass roots and they will easily tear out.
Add to that a bizarre decision to put smaller particles sizes above larger particle sizes within the composition of the rootzone gives a relatively slow rate of drainage through the surface and hydraulic conductivity (drainage to the layman - cannot take place at the speed in which it is desired.
I am not in total agreement that inter weaving fibres into the turf is the lone solution. Get the rootzone right and the job will be a whole lot easier.
