
In the mix of the brave soldiers, who left the British Isles and it's Commonwealth territories to fight on foreign soil, were of course many gardeners who worked in the employ of large country houses.
Ironically - I live in South West France - there is a legacy here to the German occupation. Roadside memorials to the resistance fighters, some as young as fifteen or sixteen years of age, who gave their lives during the Second World War are scattered around the French countryside.
Only yesterday, whilst showing friends from England the sites around Monpazier, we stopped at three such sites (as in the photo - sorry about the quality).
