Personally I think it's mostly a fad. Allotmenteering is suffering from the Jamie Oliver effect at the moment. I have friends who bought up allotment space last year who are yet to return for a second season. The wholesome idea of what's involved orking the land quickly goes and they've found it's easier to buy an organic veggie box than grow their own.

I totally agree with you Andrew - the dream is far more easily managed than the reality.

The same has happened here with some Brits who bought a ruin only to find out it is not as easy as the edited down series of House In The Sun portrays it.
