Finding a good garden designer in the UK or indeed anywhere else in the world is a tricky business and leads usually come via recommendation from a friend who may have already employed someone in their garden.
You could always take pot luck and pick, at random, a name or two from that famous yellow book but this method is a lottery because there is very little information about who you might employ.
The Society of Garden Designers have a strict vetting process for membership and will only let designers with a minimum of two years practical experience into their midst.
Membershipto the Society does not come cheap with £195.00 for adjudication of your membership and £245.00 per annum thereafter.
I had to laugh when reading the section on contacting a garden designer "Our Registered Members are surprisingly approachable so give them a call."
