Water features, that have been tested in seven garden centres in Wales, have revealed that the water is contaminated with E.coli.Fifty two samples were taken at locations in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.
WalesOnline quotes director of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health in Wales Julie Barratt as saying: “Our research has shown that water in ornamental water features may pose a health risk, particularly to children who find such things fascinating.
I just hope that this is not blown out of proportion because E.coli is present everywhere and if it can be found in garden centre water features then it can be found in private gardens, upturned dustbin lids etc.
My wife Donna is a qualified EHO and she tells me that whilst E.coli can be a problem, these finds should not be viewed with panic or surprise.
I would also question adding bleach to a water feature where birds would drink and bathe.
My understanding is that E.coli is actually much more common than most of us realize. I do think that it only seems logical to make sure to clean with bleach any outdoor garden wall fountains that birds or other animals could eliminate in.
