I bought a small house in the Dordogne, France, and moved here in 2008. Here in the countryside, I have juggled jobs, teaching and sending in pieces to the Advertiser/Connexion, the English language paper for French residents before becoming interested in blogs. Now I write for the web (and teach a bit).
In a previous world, I had a career in the BBC in Broadcasting, working as an engineer in News and Current Affairs, and I worked freelance for some years in London. During this time I also wrote and produced for local radio projects in London and for national public radio in Knoxville, Tennessee.
There was never enough time to follow things I was interested in. I had completed an an MSc Engineering Product Design but as I also enjoyed drawing and design, I went on to do a PostGrad Diploma in Design Research for Disabilities, to bring together the technical and artistic sides of product design. I had worked on redesigning a portable chainsaw mill for use by small groups in rainforests, to avoid the effects of clear-felling. It brought me into contact with Stihl's obsolete models 076 - and many forest and wood specialists. I was interested then and now in ideas of sustainability and the environment, but I didn't like some parts of academia that had to be followed, and I didn't like design based on inappropriate ergonomics, or market-led design.
I then worked for a year in North Wales which rubbed a bit of the shine from my romantic illusions about fell running or walking in meadows. However, city life was no longer the only answer.
Taking a more community minded approach I then took a PGCE Design Technology Electronics in order to teach in Secondary Schools, but after a couple of years, I joined the rising numbers of teachers choosing to do something else. I could never come up with a better system and mustering the required authority was never easy. In fact having taken yoga classes for twenty years, I followed a late friend's advice who, thinking of my welfare, said: The only thing you should teach is yoga.
So I returned to Broadcasting, and this time Sports; golf and football before moving to France.
Good luck on the new enterprise. I am sure you will enjoy this challenging venture.
