A father and son partnership from Essex wins top prize at the APL annual awards.
Chris (father) and Paul Baker of Holland Landscapes have been recognised by their landscaping peers at the Association of Professional Landscapes' annual awards, held at the Kensington Roof Gardens, for a project construction in the garden of a 14th century property near Colchester, Essex.
The new £28,000 project won in the £15-30,000 category as well as taking the supreme award - best in show.
Highly commended went to The Millbrook Garden Company and commended went to Outdoor Creations.
The original garden consisted of an existing lawn and some brick paving. The brick paving was re-used in the new scheme, designed by Karen Chamberlain Garden Design.
Talking to Landscape Juice about the garden, Landscape Juice Network member Paul Baker of Holland Landscapes said: "I guess one of the biggest challenges was the fact that the building was built in the 14th century and nothing was square. By designing the garden in small areas this made it easy to hide the rustic nature of the house.
"Another difficulty of the contract was the garden had a steep slope halfway down the garden, in the middle of the proposed lawn area. We used a mechanical digger to level this off. The soil was a lovely dark loam so all soil was recycled back on site.
The materials we used were, softwood sleepers, existing brick pavers which were power washed and Global Stone Old Rectory Antique Verde Limestone.
I asked Paul his initial feelings after being presented with the award, he said: "It was a surprise to win our category. We was very pleased with that but when our name was mentioned for the supreme award we couldn't believe it. To beat much bigger and more well known landscape companies to the top accolade is one of our best achievements and we are extremely proud of our team."
