B&Q has asked 2degrees to find sustainable replacements for peat in all its products.
The Peat Zero Challenge invites ideas, discussion and contributions from all industries to be submitted by Friday 22nd April 2011.
B&Q is looking for suitable peat alternatives, and has had success in significantly reducing the amount of peat-based products that it sources and sells. However, it has not been successful in completely eliminating peat from these products and their goal remains extremely challenging.
A substitute growing media needs to satisfy the performance requirements of horticulture and gardening. To be sustainable, an alternative needs to be scalable, available at consistent quality, meet seasonal peak demand and be cost competitive.
The most promising ideas will be invited to a private forum, with B&Q, for solutions development.
