If you go down to the woods you might be in for a surprise as metal dragonflies, giant owls, and even a tadpole man greet you on a new sculpture trail at Stourhead National Trust Estate.
The Scraptors are a group of four sculptors whose brief from the National Trust was 'to work with the landscape and encourage visitors to venture Beyond the Garden Gate'.
Fiona Campbell, one of the Scraptors, said: “We have used ingenuity to source materials from scrapyards, undergrowth and disused quarries and owe thanks to numerous kind donations of materials from local friends and supporters, especially in Somerset.”
There are more than seventy sculptures including a series of large colourful steel and wire insects, a huge heron taking off, various suspended cocoons and bulrushes, a fun steel chameleon covered with bottle tops and a triumphal arch with woven nest stretching over the wooded path.
The sculpture trail also includes a quiz for children about the myths and history surrounding the Stourhead National Trust Estate.
The trail is open at Stourhead until the end of September.
