I used to run the ground maintenance contract for Petersfield Town Council.
Part of that contract involved emptying fifty-two litter bins around the town.
Many of those bins were on recreation grounds whereby access was restricted to narrow pathways. Petersfield Heath was one particularly tricky location where a full sized truck, for example a Transit, wouldn't pass through the access points. The alternative was to detour long distances.
We bought a small Daihatsu petrol flatbed van and fitted it with a litter cage; we dubbed it the muck truck.
It was an ideal vehicle as it was nippy and light and could easily sneak through the narrow pathways.
Its major downside was its poor fuel consumption.
Oh how I wish electric technology was the same then as it is now!
Sefton Borough Council have just bought two electric vehicles for its street cleansing fleet.
The new City Fort electric tipping trucks supplied by Electric Powered Vehicle Solutions, will reduce daily fuel costs by 85%, per vehicle. Charging overnight costs just £3.00.
Each tipping truck can reach speeds of up to 45kmh, can carry a load of 530kg and has a range of fifty miles on a fully charged battery.
Of course the vehicles are also environmentally friendly.
