The CEO of the Landscape Institute LI, Alastair McCapra, is to leave after five years of what could easily be described as one of the toughest and most controversial periods of the organisation's history.
Five years ago the LI faced-up huge cuts and job losses laying off nearly one third of its workforce and committing to savings of £750,000 on its annual budget just to survive.
In late 2009 the LI was forced into a u-turn after a group of its members forced the LI to retain its library and archive.
The LI had threatened to give away or sell-off its historic documents and artefacts in a bid to save a portion of the £700,000 deficit on its budgets.
In March 2010 Annabel Downs - the then chair of the Society of Garden Designers - was ruled to have been unfairly dismissed when she was made redundant from her post as archivist at the LI in late 2008, as part of a major cost cutting exercise as the LI slid closer towards bankruptcy.
Speaking on the LI website of his departure, Alastair McCapra said: "'We are in good shape and ready for a new CEO to bring fresh energy and direction to the organisation. I’d like to thank all the members who have been so supportive of me over the last five years, for their wisdom, generosity and patience.'
