A new report by the Resolution Foundation has concluded that those working as self-employed are now earning 40 percent less than those who are employed.
What is more, the salaries of self-employed are 20 per cent lower than they were in 2006-07. In comparison, those in full-time employment have seen salaries drop by just 6%.
The revelation comes when self-employment in the UK has hit an all time high, with 15% of the working population now working for themselves.
Only 30 per cent of self-employed people are contributing to a pension, compared to 51 per cent of employees.
The report underlines just how fragile the self-employed economy really is. Just 30 percent of self-employed people are contributing to a pension, compared to 51 per cent of employees. The survey also indicates that a minority of self-employed people are experiencing difficulties getting mortgages, tenancies and accessing personal credit and loans, specifically due to being self-employed.
