Should our rural landscapes be listed?

I've just read an very interesting blog post - Only one chance to get it right - by David Fursdon about an idea "of listing the landscape in the same way as buildings are listed grade I,II or II". David makes a good point about how any system that might be put in place is in danger of being abused and that the likes of English Heritage are too resource starved to deal with running such a scheme. BALI in crisis as member takes a swipe at merger talk

The British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) appears to be heading for a crisis as one of its members warned other organisations about trying to get close. Writing in the November edition of the Pro Landscaper magazine (page 24) managing director of ISS Facilities Services Landscaping, Phil Jones, said that having seen the BALI board in action at the recent BALI AGM that he said he came away feeling far from being part of 'well-run, professional organisation'.
